The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
