On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
